Safe driving is every motorist’s responsibility. Also as a business owner, your responsibility is equally as great.
Company vehicle operators are on the road a good deal more than the average commuter. As a result, they must be ever vigilant and able to not only anticipate other motorists’ actions but also counter with the proper response. In short, they must be defensive drivers.
What is defensive driving?
Driving in such a way as to NEVER be involved in traffic collisions regardless of driving conditions or another person’s actions.
What is a defensive driver?
One who makes allowances for lack of skill and knowledge on the part of other drivers. He or she does not become involved in a collision, regardless of the hazards of weather, road or vehicle condition, or the actions of others. He or she stays constantly alert, recognizes a collision-producing situation far enough in advance to apply the necessary preventive action, and yields the right of way, when necessary, to prevent a collision.
Why is defensive driving important?
There are many more vehicles to contend with and driving speeds are generally higher. Since hazardous conditions are likely to be encountered at any time, it is important to drive accordingly at all times.

- Are all company vehicles suited equipped and maintained to safe performance of their tasks?
- Are vehicles stored safely to prevent tampering, theft or physical damage?
- Does vehicle maintenance adhere to manufacturers’ specifications?
- Do standards of employees’ use of their own vehicles include conditions of use and requirements for specific insurance?
- Does company policy limit personal use of company vehicles by employees, their family members, and others?
- Does driver selection and qualification include:
Reference checks with previous employers?
Initial and periodic checks of the employee’s motor vehicle record and license?
- Does mandatory driver training include:
– Maintenance requirements?
– Collision procedures?
- Do vehicle records include:
– Up-to-date maintenance records?
– Inspection records?
