Four Key Elements of a Workplace Safety Program

4 Key Elements of a Workplace Safety ProgramAccording to the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), businesses spend $170 billion a year on costs associated with occupational injuries and illnesses — expenditures that come straight out of company profits.

Workplace safety programs can help employees avoid disruptive and sometimes devastating impacts on their lives. OSHA research indicates that engaging employees in dialogue with management and each other about safety and health can lead to improved relationships and better overall communication, along with reduced injury rates.

Designing a safe work environment program is rooted in common sense.  Since each workplace is different, your plan should focus on the types of accidents and exposures that could happen in your workplace.

These four key elements of a good safety and health program are based on OSHA recommendations. Review them to make sure your program includes them.

  1. Lead by example. Management should set policy, support responsibility and follow the rules. Your business should have a written policy about safety expectations and procedures and all employees should have a copy of this document and updates to it.
  2. Schedule regular worksite safety reviews. You should continuously evaluate your worksite to identify existing and potential hazards. To engage your employees in this process, create a standard form they can use to report any safety issues in the workplace that they spot.
  3. Create methods to monitor potential hazards. Examples of techniques include thoroughly maintaining workplace equipment and making sure employees are wearing all necessary safety equipment.
  4. Offer safety training to all employees. One way to wrap this into your company workflow is to include brief safety trainings at regularly scheduled department meetings. Another way to is to share safety tips, such as a safety tip of the day, with employees.
