Space Heater Safety Checklist

space heater shutterstock_41801989Space heaters are often used in homes to supplement the central heating system. When operated properly, space heaters can be a safe way to increase the temperature of a small room without overheating the entire home.  Below are some space heater safety tips and recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Choose a heater with a thermostat and overheat protection
  • Make sure the heater has an auto shut-off to turn the heater off if it tips over
  • Purchase a heater with the seal of an independent testing laboratory
  • Keep the heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including people
  • Place the heater on a solid, flat surface
  • Plug the heater directly into the wall outlet. Never use an extension cord
  • Keep space heaters out of the way of foot traffic. Never block an exit
  • Keep children away from the space heater

Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when you leave the room or go to bed. To learn more about protecting your family and home, contact an AssuredPartners NL Agent at (888) 702-0901.
