Stay Healthy with these Hand Hygiene Tips

WellnessDecember 4-10 is National Handwashing Awareness Week. Did you know that practicing good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of germs? Health experts estimate that 80 percent of common infections are spread through hand contact.

91 percent of adults say they always wash their hands after using public restrooms but only 80 percent do after using the bathroom at home. It is important to always wash your hands to keep the germs away. Below are several tips to remember when washing your hands:

  • Always use soap when washing your hands. Soap is what prevents germs from sticking to your hands.
  • For best results, wet hands then lather with soap, scrubbing for 20 seconds before rinsing off.
  • When using a public bathroom, use your paper towel to open the bathroom door handle.
  • Use hand sanitizer when a sink is not readily available.

Not only will cleaning your hands help prevent you from getting sick, it will help you from getting others sick. Always wash your hands or use sanitizer after coughing, sneezing, blowing your nose, going to the bathroom, handling animals or waste and handling the garbage. Communicate this proper procedure for handwashing by promoting National Handwashing Awareness Week.
