Three Simple Steps to Take if You Suspect You’ve Been Hacked

Three Simple Steps to Take if You Suspect You’ve Been HackedFinding out from the nightly news that you are among millions of people whose credit cards were hacked can cause a lot of apprehension for most people. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, as of June 2013, more than 11 million people are victims of identity theft annually. If you think you’ve been the victim of a credit card theft or hacking, don’t panic and follow these three simple steps:

  1. Check Your Credit and Debit Accounts Online
You want to find out if there has been any unusual activity on your accounts as soon as possible. In most cases, you can contest a credit card transaction if you think it’s fraudulent and your liability is capped at $50. Debit cards are similar, but usually you must report the fraudulent activity within a few days or your liability jumps up to $500. Checking your accounts online every day is an excellent habit. You will be more likely to notice a transaction that you did not make.
  2. Cancel Your Cards
Even if you do not see suspicious activity on your accounts, the safest action to take if you think you have been hacked is to cancel your cards immediately. This will prevent any bogus charges from hitting your accounts. Keep the phone numbers of your bank and credit card companies in a safe place where you can easily access them. In most cases, they can send a new card to you quickly.
  3. Reset Your Passwords
Change your personal login information for your bank and credit card companies. You want to be smart about creating passwords. Having an easy to remember password may make your life easier, but it also makes it easier for a hacker to access your data.  According to Splashdata, a credit card protection company, 123456 and password are the two most common passwords.  Use something with a mix of letters and numbers and create different passwords for each account.
