Three Tips to Protect Your Home from Winter Storm Damage

Three tips for avaiding winter storm damage to your home. While winter storms create excitement among children who get a day off from school, these storms often give homeowners a headache because they can wreak havoc on property. The Insurance Information Institute reported that winter storms caused $1.9 billion in insured losses in 2013.

As a homeowner, you want to prepare for winter storms so you can prevent costly damage. Most importantly you want to make sure you have adequate property insurance for your home in order to avoid a financial blow after the storm.

Check out these three tips to help you protect your home.

  1. Prevent ice dams. Icicles hanging from your roof could mean you have ice dams. These occur when heat from inside a house escapes through the roof causing snow to melt towards the center of the roof and refreeze near the edges. This can result in water seeping into your home through your roof.  If you discover ice damming during the winter, call a residential roofing company immediately. They can help you with stop gap measures to minimize damage until you can schedule an evaluation in the spring.
  2. Remove dead branches. Ice accumulation on trees could lead to fallen trees and branches. This could damage your house, a car, or injure someone walking near your property. Make it is part of your fall clean up to identify and remove dead tree limbs and branches.  If you discover this midwinter, be sure to call a licensed tree contractor to deal with it in the short term.
  3. Buy a generator. Your home is less likely to sustain damage if the power stays on during a winter storm when frozen pipes and other hazards can happen. A standby generator installed by a licensed electrician is safest and most efficient solution, but portable generators can get you through a storm safely if you follow the instruction of use carefully. The most important thing to remember is that portable generators should be placed in a well-ventilated area because the carbon monoxide they produce can cause sickness or death.
